The name Gairo is derived from the Greek word for "ground that moves", a reference to the hydro-geological instability that affects part of the area. Its name appeared for the first time in an official document from 1217; in 1316 the town was included in the Pisa tax census. In 1951 very heavy rains lead to the town being moved to where it is now.
There are many traces of the Prenuragic Age (2500-800 BC), with the domus de janas of Scalarrana, and of the Nuragic Age (800-238 BC), with the villages of Is Tostoinus and Perdu Isu. There are also many Roman remains: coins, jars... Along the course of the Flumendosa or the torrents that cut into the hillside, you can fish for trout and eels, while along the magical coastline you can find sea bream, bass and gilthead, and molluscs and crustaceans. From the mountains you can follow countless archaeological and nature walks which wind through unspoiled woods with rich fauna: from Tarquisara, reaching the valley and little lake of Genna Orruali, you can visit the archaeological area of the limestone Tacchi and the natural monument of Perda Liana, reachable both from Gairo Tarquisara and from the SS 198 at the Sercei cantoniera.
From Baccu 'e Praidas towards the Marina di Gairo, Su Sirboni, Cala 'e Luas and, lastly, Coccorrocci, we find charming and unspoiled beaches and crystal seas. The local cooking is characterised by typical sweets, prighittus and amaretti, and famous local wines.
