Perched on the Ogliastra mountains, the small typical town of Osini is an unusual place, off the beaten tourist track. It's on the road for Jerzu, after you've driven about half the SS125 (coming from Cagliari) or having briefly travelled alongside the Lago Alto Flumendosa (for those arriving from elsewhere in the island). Arriving from the south, you come first to Osini Nuova, constructed only from 1951 onwards; a few km further on you catch glimpses of the old town of Osini, abandoned between 1951 and 1960 after a terrible flooding.
The old houses are very moving and beautiful: you walk through the silent streets and find, still well-preserved, a perfect photograph of an Ogliastra town from the 1950's, with the typical houses with their little wooden doors.
