According to oral history, the town was founded by the inhabitants of a coastal village of the Sarrabus whose village had been destroyed by the Barbarians, though there isn't an exact date for the founding of Perdasdefogu. The oldest document bearing the town's name is from 1328, when the town's tax payers were counted. The Perdasdefogu area is very rich in prenuragic and nuragic settlements, of which the main ones are the Domus de Janas with the adjacent nuragic spring of Giuanni Puddu and Sa Dommu de s'Orcu, the nuraghi of S'Orcu de Tueri, Felissiu, the megalithic monument of Su Perdiargiu The town's jewel is the pre-Roman church of San Sebastiano, located in the highest part of the town, and thought by art historians to date to between 850 and 1000 A.D. The church has 3 naves, with three niches in the central nave separated from the others by a series of arches similar to those found in the churches in Asturias and Catalonia.
The area is very interesting for its geology and botany: for many years it has been the object of frequent scientific expeditions from Italian and overseas universities as well as the experts from Britain's main Natural History museums, under the supervision of the British Council. For natural lovers, you can visit the nature reserve of Bruncu Santoru, as well as the countryside around the town and the Holm Oak woods, and walk along the rivers rio Sa Luada e Rio Luesu. The town has some murals (murales) which commemorate its ancient and recent history, including the missile launch from the first base created in Europe, with the missiles being brought back on a ox-cart! Gastronomic specialities are the various home-made pastas and the typical Ogliastra roast meats.
