A mountain centre in Ogliastra, Seui is mentioned for the first time in official documents in 1300 with its name spelt in various ways: Shuy, Sheuuhy, Sechuy. There are lots of nuragic remains in the area, with interesting sites near the Tonneri and at Montarbu. Seui is an important reference point for mountain holidays, with the Montarbu nature riserve where you can admire limestone cliffs, beautiful landscapes, and endemic plants and animals only found in Sardinia. The town has an interesting old centre, with tortuous medieval alleys, stone houses, protruding upper stories and wrought-iron balconies. The town has a fine series of museums, with a Liberty-style palazzo, the Casa Farci, the Spanish prison and the Galleria Civica. In the museum you can see exhibits from peasant life, farming, and mining, and local handicrafts. Don't miss the parish church and the country churches, as well as other building from the past, such as the Laveria del Carbone (Coal Wash House) from 1800 and the mine Fundu de Corongiu, where production stopped in 1959.
Seui has as well on of the island's oldest railway stations. The Sardinia railway is unique in that it's the only narrow-gauge railway still in operation, and is considered a living and working example of industrial archaeology. Each year the Trenino Verde takes visitors to the most hard-to-reach and pretty corners of the island. Seui's economy is based on forestry, goat rearing, and production of wrought iron, wood, sweets and bread in the traditional way. You can eat several types of meat roasted in the traditional Ogliastra way and Su Pani de Saba, bread made from a dough made with cooked wine.
