The town is situated above a broad valley between the tree-covered mountain Padente Mannu and Serra Longa. The Talana area is rugged and rocky, with rich woods at Padente Mannu, Marghine, Gudunu and Ovelio. There are many springs and rivers. You find as well abandoned mines, among which Su Zippiri, rich in copper and carbonate, and, at Monterbiu, with some veins of silver pyrite. According to some historians the name Talana can be traced to the Mesopotamic term for splendour of the sky, others point to the Etruscan Talana, the female god of youth. The town belonged to the Giudicato di Gallura from the start of the fourteenth century, passing then to the Pisans, to the Aragonese, to the Spanish, to the Austrians and finally to the Piemontese.

The domus de janas at Silacararo are the only traces of prenuragic life, and have the peculiarity of being interconnected. The nuraghi in this area are some of Sardinia's highest: Nuraghe Odrollai (1173 m), the nuraghe at Bruncu Tortari (1214 m) and Bruncu Pisu Cerbu (1348 m). Easier to reach is the nuragic complex Bau 'e Tanca, a few kilometres from the village, interesting for the unusual symmetry of the central nucleus. From the Roman period, in 1921 an unknown collector found 676 bronze imperial coins, which spanned the reigns of 20 emperors, at Sorgargia. The parish church of Santa Marta was constructed by an unknown architect; the construction, started in 1831, were completed in 1909. The whole village contributed to its building, and for this reason the church is much-loved by the people of Talana. With one nave and seven side chapels, it's built in the " classicheggiante" style; inside there are some very fine wooden statues from the eighteenth century and a silver cross whose date is uncertain. The small country church of Sant'Efisio, from the eighteenth century, is important because the festival there is the first each year of the country festivals in Ogliastra.
