Tertenia, Ogliastra's most southerly town, is at the border with the province of Cagliari and at the edge of what in medieval times was the Giudicato Cagliaritano. It is situated on the slopes of Monte Giuilea in a distinctive tectonic valley which, from the pass of Genna'e Crexia, slopes down to the Marina di San Lorenzo , and is bounded to the west by the limestone plateaus of Taccu Mannu and Tacchixèddu, and to the east by the granite-schist chain of Serramàri. At its side, coming down from mountains of Jerzu, runs the river Rio Quirra. Characterised by spates when it rains hard, it is the most important watercourse of the whole area.. The predominantly-mountainous zone looks over the Tyrrhenian Sea with over 12km of coastline. Here you find, like a natural amphitheatre, the flat beach of Sàrrala overlooked to the west by the rocky chain of Serramàri, and with blood-red rocky promontories and beautiful dunes of fine white sand.
The long coastline with its hinterland full of interest made this place in times past the destination of sailors looking for safe harbours and places to settle. Tertenia's boundaries form a sort of square, and it has some interesting hills, with substrates of various different rocks. In synthesis, this is a very varied area, rugged and with its jagged outlines, dominated by the limestone plateaus of Taccu Mannu e Taccixèddu., and hemmed in by a series of hamlets belonging to other comunes, the result of a long-ago donation of land by the Countess Donna Violante Cruz to the comunes of the Sarrabus and Ogliastra. In the local gastronomy the roast meats , pardulas, gattò and tasty cheeses stand out.
