On the east coast of the island, Triei is one of Sardinia's most charming villages, with its unspoilt Nature and surrounding woods of holm oak, cork oaks, carobs, and olives and the Mediterranean macchia, with its varied wildlife. In the spring the hills are the intense yellow of broom. In fact, the town's name comes from Trieu, a nuragic placename meaning a place with lots of broom. There are various legends regarding the town's birth: according to one, the town was founded by the people living on the coast who moved inland to escape the Saracen raids; another says that the inhabitants of the Osono plateau, 3km from the town's present site, descended into the valley in an attempt to get away from a plague. The town is dominated by the church of the Saints Cosimo e Damiano; it contains interesting fourth-century frescoes. The town's agriculture is principally based on the growing of grapes, and famous wines and spirits (filu 'e ferru) have been produced since 1700. Bee-keeping is also a local tradition and various types of honey are produced, including the rare and prized bitter honey from the flowers of the corbezzolo (strawberry tree).

Four kilometres from the town is the plateau of Osono, from where your view extends east to the sea and to the north to the mountains which are covered with a splendid forest of holm oaks and junipers, where you can easily see mouflon and other animals such as foxes, wild boar and martens. In this same area the impressive tombe dei giganti and the Bau Nuraxi fortress have been discovered, from the ancient nuragic civilisation. In the Mullà park, 3 km from the town centre, you can admire thousand-year old lentiscs and enjoy the atmosphere of the old church (XVIII century), in which to this day the festival of Sant'Antonio is celebrated. Of Ardali, a hamlet of Triei, the people remember the legend according to which today's small centre was once a rich and prosperous centre. There is an old silver and lead mine, which was worked up until the 1950's, 1km from the town centre. The town's craftspeople are skilled in weaving. The typical dishes are roast goat and goat soup, and roast pork and lamb. The traditional sweets are pabassina, pirighittu, seada, and turrone.
