Ulassai is situated at the base of the charming Tacchi. The Tacchi are limestone plateaus with steep sides. They resemble upturned heels (tacco means heel in Italian) and are the most distinctive features of the Ulassai area, whose limestone countryside is completely different to that of the rest of Sardinia. A large part of the Tacchi is covered by holm oaks and Mediterranean herbs, making the area even more lovely. There are many springs which, at the times of the year when it rains the most, give rise to waterfalls, including the falls of Lecorci, near (300m) from the town, and Lequerci, at Santa Barbara (7km from the town). The latter, the nicest, falls 80-100 metres. and can reach 60-70 metres in width. At the base of the Tacchi, a little above the Lecorci falls, is the entrance to the Su Murmuri cavern, one of Sardinia's biggest and most imposing. It is almost 100 m long and a height of between 30 and 50 m. You can't help admiring the grandeur of the entrance, the width of the various internal chambers, the variety of the rock, the different shades of the colours and the size of the stalactites and stalagmites.

The arch of Barigau is the town's symbol, a monument representing the last remnants of an ancient town wall, now completely obliterated. In addition, it's worth seeing the works of the important local artists Maria Lai and Costantino Nivola which harmoniously blend in among the traditional buildings of the town centre and the unspoilt beauty of the surrounding countryside. The woven handicrafts are famous. For those who want to immerse themselves in unspoilt nature, the area has many sports climbs bolted in the last few years and the old tracks used in the past by charcoal burners and shepherds which has been restored and now, perfectly signed, weave between breathtaking overhangs and holm-oak woods. Tombe dei giganti and nuragic dwellings are found near to the various nuraghi, and traces of Roman settlements can be found at Grisaili, Neuletta, Testerei, Cuilis de is iligis ladas, Godditorigius, and Cuccurru de Maraccus. For lovers of good cooking, there's roast goat, and culurgiones or kokoi prenas, Cottu small breads, all washed down with a good Cannonau wine.
