Villagrande Strisaili is sheltered from the winds by a crown of mountains rising to over 1000m amsl, including Monte Idolo, Monte Orguda and Monte Isaladu.; to the east, a broad valley, which descends towards the Tyrrhenian sea, presents a unique scene, with woods of holm-oak, intensely perfumed Mediterranean macchia, granite rock outcrops, and one of the clearest and most inviting seas. The abundance of spring water, and the rivers which cross this area, give rise to the important forests of the area: the holm-oak, oak, cork tree, juniper, alder, willow and holly are to be found in the Santa Barbara, Sa Pauli, Monte Idolo, Saromonis, Nuradulu woods and in the Gambasuntas and Gennargentu forests. The undergrowth is composed of strawberry trees, heather, cistus, mirto, thyme, lentisc, the curry plant and many plants with medicinal uses such as foxglove and gentians.
In the 12th century the village was part of the Curatoria and then the Giudicato of Ogliastra, after which it passed to the Pisans, the Aragonese, and to the Spaniards. Around 1670 the destruction of the village of Onnis and a fight over its grazing lands gave rise to a bloody struggle between the shepherds of Fonni and Villagrande which lasted for nearly 200 years. In terms of prenuragic remains, there are 5 perfectly-conserved Domus de Janas at Coile Bruxiau, Su Strumpu, Corte'e Marceddu, S'Orciada and Rio Settile; there's also a Menhir, Sa Preda'e s'Orcu. The remains of a megalithic grave are to be found in the Santa Barbara wood. The nuragic settlements are numerous, with 7 Tombe dei Giganti, 17 nuraghi and, scattered all round the area, 10 nuragic villages, including the nuragic complex of S'Arcu'e Forros, with its Megaron temple and two well-temples. Mink, pigs, sheep, and quail are reared and apple growing is widespread. Villagrande is a village with many traditional farmers, but there are also modern forward-looking firms. Finally, the handicrafts in wood, wrought iron and the blankets and carpets woven on ancient looms are worth mentioning.
