THINGS TO DO

Hiking in Urzulei

Urzulei is situated in the north of Ogliastra, at the boundary with the Barbagia in centre-east Sardinia. At the foot of Monte Gruttas, it is bounded by the comunes of Baunei, Talana, Dorgali and Orgosolo. The territory of Urzulei includes some important rivers, such as the Flumineddu and the fiume Codula di Luna, which reaches the sea at the famous beach of Cala Luna.

The walk to the Gola del Gorroppu is fascinating, ideal for those who love unspoilt nature, with the deep gorges, holes and caves formed by the action of water on the limestone rock, and discovering ancient nuragic remains in a harsh environment, where the only person you'll meet is the diffident but polite shepherd of the Supramonte. How could you imagine that a coastline so famous for its beaches and cliffs can conceal, just inland, such wild beauty?
The terrain is cut by valleys and canyons that sometimes are totally inaccessible. With the surrounding vegetation, woods of holm oak, and the bright white rock, this is truly a fascinating place.

Gorroppu, formed over millions of years, casts its spell over all those who visit it. Words alone can't describe all the emotions you feel inside the enormous chasm, with its huge cavities, drops and water chutes, between the walls sculpted by the wind and the water, whose work over the millennia has created rare forms of beauty.
